Solos that sing...

Sign in to disble this ad
I am interested in any advice any of you have to make my solos 'sing.' I come from a metal background--so, shred is what I grew up with: fast and linear. I also grew up learning jazz, swing and big band in school along with theory, but never was around many good jazzy (or just good in general) players or got to solo much in that setting.. Check out this vid of Jimmy Haslip, it is really an eye opener for me--

How do you get to the point of conveying such melody in soloing? I default to running scales or scale tones and I think this is a weakness.. So what are your tips?
