Somewhat new to slapping

I'm a self taught player for about 9 years now. Although I have been player for a little while now, I still don't think my slapping is up to par. Does anyone have any suggestions to make my slapping technique better? i.e. songs to learn, players to listen to, albums to listen to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy! After playing off and on since 1970 I'm about three months into learning the slapping thing myself. This past weekend I found a book/CD pack by Tony Oppenhiem called "Slap It." (I hope I got the name right.... I just got to work). It's filled with some great exercises and I'm finding it's going to help me a lot. I would highly recommend it. I found it at a Guitar Center in my area. I'm sure others will chime in here. Good luck to you!

Try Exercising to "Woodpecker From Mars" off of Faith No More's "The Real Thing".
It's got a simple slap pop slap pop feel in the beginning and then lets loose.

It's aggressive, but a good solid slap workout.

P.S
Billy Gould is awesome.

I found this to be fun AND informative when I checked it out.

To Mr. BH ... What aspect of your technique is troubling you?

Set the strings on fire, and then try to hit them with your thumb. You'll want to pull your thumb away as fast as possible, lest the fire win.

@rebelscum: mainly flow. I can slap and pop but getting a good groove is the hard part.

I'm sure you have a groove or two that you play finger or pick style. Try grooving with your thumb instead. No one taught me either, so I'm just throwing out what helped me.

C'mon fellow TB slap monkeys ... Chime in

learn the slapping-through-the-string-technique... In my experience this gives you more low end and overall speed than the speedy-bouncing.

You might want to start with the thread that's stuck to the top of the page that says "The Slap Bass Welcome Center"
