Sounding like a guitar.

Sign in to disble this ad
my first thread. i saw a few posts asking about how to sound like a guitar. what i found works is you have a high treb and mid eq set up and use the stanley clarke flamenco [i hope i spelled that right] finger raking style. thats where you hit the strings with your finger nails. http://youtube.com/watch?v=aCjmtW7FEYI is a good way to see how its done by the man himself. it sounds like a guitar when you get it right, and it fools alot of people. i played a solo using this style with a guitar distortion pedle and everyone thought i was a guitarist. enjoy!

Not to be rude, but if you are playing bass, why would you want to sound like a guitar

(very first thread)
Why not? How many guitarists sound like bassists? You know? Best of both worlds, man. It might be cool, once in a while, to play it high-end, all screechy and chameleon-like (as a lead-guitarist), then, when it's time to rupture internal organs and "take 'em home," lay down the thunder...

of course he can just pick up a guitar

but a bass sounding like a guitar serves its own purpose, especially if it's meant to be accompanied in a part of a song

Believe me, when I first heard some New Order stuff, I thought Peter Hook's bass solos sounded like guitar.

dude, its a style of play!
its called a "drum and bass band"

i'm trying to do one, just to test the waters.
basically, you run a bass through a cable splitter.
one end goes to the bass rig, other goes to a guitar rig.

you don't even need effects sometimes. You can play power chords. i SUCK and HATE guitar, but i like the way it sounds.

for a sample,
go to projectplaylist.com and search "Death From Above 1979"

thats the bands name. Make sure it says the 1979 at the end of the name.

Its actually pretty fun.

i mean,
i'm a hardcore bassist and i never listen, nor stay volumes under the guitars. They are guitards. But i kinda like it.
It also saves drama, because i sing to, so its only a two-piece band.
or you can have a three piece.

Its kinda hard to come up with original stuff sometimes, and also hard not to play a kick*** bassline, but you can play both kinda.

I don't recommend this to anyone really, because it has to sound good or people won't like it.

I just don't like people that are supposed to play the bass but makes there bass sound like a guitar, there is no point.

Has anyone thought about it in the perspective of a solo bassist making his bass emulate other noises? Who cares if you want your bass to sound like a guitar? It's still a goddamn bass.

Thanks,
I'm the only string instrument in the band. I often do the same type of thing. I also pluck with the soft side of my finger pulling up. I can only do the a d and g strings like this and get a good result.
The link to the youtube vid should be useful when I get home.

Also, I was going to write a thread about how I feel "thinking of myself as a bassist" is a limiting thing. I write much better when I can use many instruments/styles/sounds.

Solo bassists, ye sure go crazy but if you play in a band and have a guitarist i dont see why you would want to sound like him..

Well, in some cases, playing a fast harmonized line high on the neck together with guitar sounds awesome... But no need to change your sound specifically for that, it's an exception and not a rule.

Billy Sheehan, Cliff Burton, John Entwistle, Steve Harris, Steve Swallow, Carles Benavent, Colin Hodgkinson? The bass itself is an instrument, not a role. The role is defined by the music the artist seeks to express.

BTW, that's fine if you think the music or the concept of the band is hokey, but Joey DeMaio plays bass 97% of the time in his band the way you would "approve" of it, and plays one solid pocket while he's at it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS47QWBycHw

...and while we're at it, here's John Entwistle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVl39LBZGMw
