I believe that past a certain speed notes become meaningless and we refer to gears instead. The guys you mentioned play in at least fifth gear. Naturally, one mistake at that speed can kill you, but so can mistakes at lower speeds. Be very careful no matter how fast you're driving.

speed really has nothing to do with the notes being 16th or 8th or whole notes..its more bpms and whether theyre 16th or whatever combined...because, a whole note at 400 bpms is the same length as a quarter note at 100 bpms...OR....whole notes at 400 bpms sound faster than 32nd notes at 2 bpms.

With 16ths at 200bpm, you're starting to get in the big boys' playground.

I myself can only endure 16ths up to 180ish bpm, and thats when I'm warmed up. But I'm talking 2 fingers technique here. I'm starting to work my 3 fingers now, I'm about at 140-150ish with 3 fingers, and its MUCH less tiring than the same speed at 2 fingers.

I'm guessing I should hit 200bpm+ at 3 fingers withing roughly 2 years, maybe 3. I'll see

Nah, I just like the rushing sound of high speed mid-range notes on a fretless board, sort of what you hear when Steve DiGiorgio decides its time he owns the guitarist's picking speed with his fingering.

Thanks. I maxed with two around 2004. Since then I've been working on all 5 fingers. I can control the speed on 1-2 strings but if I have to do major string skipping it hangs up.

Hitting that speed was in a controlled envoriment (my studio) and I held it for about 30 sec's. It required some work to get to that tempo. Not sure if I could do it right now with two fingers. I could come close with four.

Check out my bass solo at MySpace. I recorded that in 04 as well. I think I came close to the 214bpm in that as well but it was recorded without a metronome so there's no telling.

Nice solo work. I'd be curious to see videos of your playing.

Curious about what part of my playing?
It going to be a few months before I can do a vid.

About everything, I always try to look at every aspects of a bass player's technique, there's always something to learn at some point.

What difference does it make how fast you can play notes? Isn't the object of music to sound good, not blaze through notes like they're nothing? Just wondering.

Some people don't appreciate the feeling that speed gives. It does sound good when used right, but its your most total right to dislike it. It's like everything else, matter of tastes.

i can do 16th notes at about 220 using rmim.but what do guys like di giorgio and sheehan top out at? im guessing ive never heard 16ths at more than 250. if that. but the world record for single strokes is over 1200, so i imagine there are bassists out there able to play this fast.
