Speed of playing

Sign in to disble this ad
i've been playing for approx 6 months now.

I've been learning to play metallica's seek and destroy but the middle section (tempo 208 - especially the quarter note sections) is currently out of my limits in terms of mainly L hand speed but also R hand speed using a pick. So i've been learning it at reduced speed with a tascam mp3 trainer.

Is it just best to just to continue to keep playing the song and attempting faster speeds and wait for my skill level to catch up (i'm now very comfortable with it at 2/3rds normal speed but a 16% reduction is currently too quick) or is there good resources (books/dvd's) that can provide good exercises for improving speed and accuracy?

Using a metronome or equipment with the same function is really the best way to learn something that may be troublesome to you. Continue increasing the speed when you feel comfortable. Theory and technique books may help you, but they are expensive. Just check youtube for exercises that will improve your approach to bass, and don't freak out when you see or hear the word "jazz."

Practice, practice, practice. You've only been playing for six months... don't get to hard on yourself. Grab a metronome and just hack it out. It'll come to you. Maybe consider some professional instruction.
