Speeding up the fretboard hand

I know that a metronome is essential to this, but aside from that, what are some good exercises with improving the fretboard hand speed? Right now I currently do a 16th note pattern that works the index, ring, and pinky finger, then it switches to the index, middle, and pinky finger.

The link below is where I got the technique from.

use the metronome. Get your pattern right and then speed it up in small steps.... like just a few numbers.

Any pattern that uses all 4 fingers and changes is a good thing. Don't get locked into one pattern.

I found that the biggest obstacle to a fast left hand is more mental than physical. We spend time training our hands to be fast but we do not train our minds to be faster. This is something you can practice away from the bass. I literally like to practice difficult left hand hand passages by "playing" them with just the left hand and imagining my hand on the fingerboard. I know that "air bass" sounds silly but the biggest part of playing fast is knowing what your left hand is supposed to be doing. "Play" through the line in your head making sure that you clearly imagine yourself playing every note in the passage. This trains you to be accountable for every note and allows you to hone in on the left hand without all of the other distractions of playing bass (like guitarist and drummers). The great part of practicing this way is that you can do it most anywhere at any time and you dont take up your actual bass time.

A little thing I used to use for a reminder of fretting finger pressure, put your index (or other) fretting finger on the string hovering above the fret you want to play (don't fret it), play 8's/16th's with your picking hand on that string, now increase down-pressure (slowly) with your fretting finger until the string frets the note cleanly and it's clear....it's surprising how little fretting finger pressure it takes to sound a note cleanly and allow you to skip around. Just a thought.
