I have a very stubborn left ring finger, so I'm using the"spider exercise" but I feel my left shoulder tightening and jamming up while I do the exercise.
Any suggestions please?

I cannot see why one's shoulder would tighten up while playing bass, are you playing sitting or standing?
Thank you very much ! I will try this at the 12th fret...I indeed was trying it too high on the fretboard and tensing up my shoulder as well.
