Wow! That's impressive! I knew Geddy was awesome, but had never seen an up close demo, or anyone that could follow it that well. See similar progression @ about 3:40 into the same.

Do you have anything to slow down the recording?

We recently toyed around with this tune in our set list and I had the same issue. I figured every other part of the song out 20 years ago but always faked that fast run. I wanted to get it right and found out that just about all the tabs out there were not accurate. I found one, and if I can dig it back up again Ill post it, that was close. Its still a fast run thats tricky because you need to stay with your drummer when he is doing a fast fill...not as easy I had thought!

Maybe message that guy in the youtube video to see if he can help you with a tab? (Im at work and cant get on youtube from here so I dont know who or what you linked to there)

Yup, that's usually where my fingers start to say, "Ha, you're funny! Keep trying, we'll just sit here pressing whatever strings we want in the meantime."

Well this makes me feel better about my playing. I thought I was having a hard time only because I'm a newbie

OK, folks...I used QuickTime to slow down the video some and got this transcription of the intro...I'm sorry I can't give more rhythm notation, but the notes are there. I've tried to break it into licks to make it easier to follow.

I'm not going to claim perfection, but it is certainly something to work with:

The Spirit of Radio intro (tricky runs)

transcribed from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtmWq7yShSc&feature=related

First part of opening
   W staccato e^e^e e^e^e
|------7-7--------4-6-4-4---2-2---2-2-----2-2-----------------------------
|----------R--------------R-----R-----0-R-----0----0-4-5-7-5-4-0-0-H-2----
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------
|--0----------------------------------------------------------------------
   \---opening----------/ \-opening lick 2--/ \--lick 3-------/

Second part of opening
W staccato change hand position here
|----------------7-5-4---4------------------------------------------------
|----------------------7---7-5-4---4-----------4---2-0---0----------------
|-----0-0------------------------7----7-5-4--2---------4---4-2------------
|--0----------------------------------------------------------------------
                 \------fast run-----------/ \-part 2-------/

MY ALTERNATIVE TO Second part of opening
Fast run transposed down to lower position
|----------------7-5-4-2-4-2-0--------------------------------------------
|------------------------------4-2-4--2-0------4---2-0---0----------------
|-----------------------------------------4--2---------4---4-2------------
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------
                 \------fast run-----------/ \-part 2-------/

Next section of intro...

This 4x Main progression, etc, etc
(the way I play it, YMMV) E B G# A B
|--------------------------|----------------------------------------------
|-*-------------------2--*-|----------------------------------------------
|-*---------0--2-3H4-----*-|-----2-------0(x5)-2--------------------------

Good luck!

Hey! Maybe you already figured it out, but anyway I've just uploaded a video playing the whole song plus the intro slowed down to 50%. Hope it helps. Here's the link:

The timing is odd. I sat down with this one a long while ago.

Here's what I got for the quick part (H = hammer on. 777 = three finger triplets):

---77754-----------------------------------
---------7-7774-4------2H4-2--------------
----------------7-7640-------5-542--------
------------------------------------0------ ect...

EDIT: You'll have to excuse my tab. I have never used or written it. I'm sure you'll get the idea.
