Sponges and being out of tune

Who plays with a sponge under their string regularly? I often switch in and out between songs, and it affects my tuning. I have trimmed my sponge down to where it gets the sound i need and it still stays tolerably in tune under the seventh fret. Otherwise I just retune if I have time in between songs. What's everybody else's experience?

I've tried mutes only to find that they screw up my tuning. I gave
up on them. However, they do appear to work for some people.

Two ways of making a foam mute, one is to trim it down so it fits under the strings and is held in place by the pressure the thickness exerts on the strings.
The other way is to put slits in it, so the strings sit in the slits and are dampened using less pressure as the depth of the slits help hold it in place as well as any pressure of needed.

I also find you have to really know how to play in open position, ex using open D strings instead of fret 5. Sound great if you have the knowledge.
