I've been trying to do this exercise as they state you should and I've been having alot of trouble.

When I place my middle finger on the 6th fret and "freeze" it, I notice I can barely get past the "E" string with my ring finger and pinky. After the "E" they start to fall ontop of each other and my middle finger will lift itself up off the 6th fret.

Do I just need to keep working at it or am I doing something wrong?

I think you just have to keep working at it. The purpose of this exercise is to get all the fingers of the left hand working independently, in particular the ring and pinky, which are usually the weakest and least independent of the left hand fingers.

It's like touching your toes. Keep at it and you'll eventually be able to do it.

The Hazard excerises should be very difficult if you do them properly. They take time to master....but will work the fingers incredibly. Better to practice these in 10 minute increments instead of trying for hours on end.....you WILL hurt your hands if you don't learn to walk before you run.

Keep working at it, at first I was struggling with this but after a little practice you'll get it.

You are doing it right the idea is to learn to control each finger and the ring finger has a mind of its own. Keep on working it takes time and patience.
