He actually doesn't - it's a common misconception. He only uses two fingers and only appears to move the third.

well when watching him it looked like he was hitting down with all three fingertips on a live video.

but actually hitting down rather than plucking wich is why i think he gets the -clatter- effect from hits frets.

anyone else with some ideas?

he uses only 2 thats for sure. he kinda hits strings but he has light touch and fat flatwounds so he doesn't get too much clanking. With regular rounds it would get very messy.

If I remember correctly, I read that he only uses two fingers, and starts each group of three sixteenth notes with his index. So it looks like i-imi-imi-imi...

I just use the strict alternating two finger technique for the gallop (i-mim-imi-mim...) and can keep up just fine, at least for a little while. Whatever floats your boat.

you should still consider learning 3 finger technique if you want speed particularly for metal or soloing. I do 3-2-1 for gallops, and 3-2-1-3/2-1-3-2....etc for solid 16th notes

Just a small comment: That galloping rhythm doesn't contain any triplets, it's two 16ths and an 8th note.

Better said: Each beat has one eighth note plus two sixteenths.

He uses 2 fingers, it's been stated in plenty of interviews.

The unique thing about that little bass solo in Run to the Hills, he normally doesn't play riffs like that, I hate to say it (esp because I'm such a huge fan) but that was kind of the last original sort of solo he had done (up until his little XFactor bass solo).

He's all stamina though, that's his sound.

No, it's very low. That's why you can hear his strings hitting the frets sometimes.

yeah he only uses 2 fingers but i've seen others play iron maiden songs with triplets by using three fingers. when i play run to the hills i do the fast triplet part in the beginning with two fingers. just practice over and over and get the right rhythm and u'll be able to do it. i've tried playing with three fingers and it annoys me so much.

Yep these guys here have the right idea. That said, I think it'd be cool to develop some three finger technique. Done right, you can get damn fast- like tremolo picked death metal fast. So for galloping I always go 3-2-1 but I also find that I tend to follow my frethand direction with my plucking too... so going up the fretboard I play 1-2-3, but down it's 3-2-1.

Sometimes? most of the time.

You're action doesn't have to be set high to get that sound, my action was ridiculously high when I was a kid and I still got that claking sound.

Someone needs to corner micheal kenney.

Some of the time. The intro to The Clairvoyant is a good example of that sound, but you don't hear his strings banging against the frets nonstop throught the songs, at least not the ones I listen to.

He controls it perfectly. It's not something that happens to him, it's a part of his sound. I try to mess around with stuff like that myself, but it's very hard to get consistant...
