sticky fingers

Sign in to disble this ad
I played a festival this weekend and it really sucked. It was 95 deg. and I was sweating like crazy. My hands were damp sticky and I could not play up to my ability, not even close.

What's the best thing to do for this? One of the guys in the band put WD-40 on his strings but I thought this might add more wear to the strings. We all know bass strings are not cheap.

Any advise?

Before you play, wipe your fingers on the side of your nose.

No joke, seriously.

Yup, that's true. Nose oil is the cheapest lubricant around. I think doghouse players do this a lot?

Wow, it's either reassuring or really weird to discover that I'm not the only one who's ever used nose grease... I'm not sure which...

I'm still young I can use forehead grease too

Nothing is worse than getting your fingers sticky and accidently popping when your finger gets stuck under a string

It's a bassist thing. You're normal.

Well, in that sense anyways

Bring a towel, like one a golfer or bowler would use.
Bring some baby powder or after-shower powder.
Wipe your sweaty hands with the towel. Get as much sweat off as you can.
Sprinkle some powder on your hands and work it around. This will dry your hands and fingers so they don't stick to the strings for a while until you have to do it again.
Umm... you probably shouldn't purposely put grease on your strings. Chances are, it'll severely shorten their life.

Get a gel antipersperant. Lady Speedstick makes a scentless one. Click it up and rub it over your hands as you would hand lotion. It'll be a little sticky when it dries... so use a TINY bit of baby powder on your palms only. This'll stop any hand sweat... promise.

And bonus, you'll smell like a baby!

Cheers,
Christina

That's an interesting alternative take on sticky fingers.
