do you even have a good reason to stretch that far? i'd understand if you wanted to pull off harmonies (like a minor2nd double stop), but is that really what you're trying to accomplish? jaco stretched a lot, but he knew what he was doing. are you even trying to be muscal? i think you're just doing it for the sake of stretching your fingers. it's far more efficient to transpose those notes. look, if you want to stretch your fingers or do somersaults of roofs, then go ahead. Especially since nobody really adjusts their body to be a martial artist. If you're hitting rocks or kicking trees, you'll be crippled in a few years. Then I'll just come up behind you and RNC you.
There is a difference between conditioning your body, and destroying it. Stretching and strengthening muscles is good. You can't really stretch ligaments, but you should strengthen them anyway. |

when any good player would rock all night on a $100 dollar ''piece of crap''
i'm fully aware of ligaments and tendons and muscles being a gymnastics coach. i KNOW what im doing. Please don't make me edit posts....Rule #1 - repsect for other members. ~Mod

I remember one of my early bass lessons where my instructor gave me some fret stretching exercises. I felt there was not way I could do it. Once he held up his hands, I could never make another lame arguement again. He has very small hands, I mean small. My wife has bigger hands than him. His hands are so small, he has to hit your hand 3 times to give you five. I mean...small.

Sure, pal. When I need sound advice on matters of anatomy and physiology, I always consult a gym coach instead of a qualified physician. |

| | | | I can reach from 9th on E string to 20th on G string. My old teacher told me about a pianist who had small hands so he cut the webbing between them and messed them up real bad |

| | | | ok, about the 2-6 fret stretch. there is a simple way to do it, but you may not have enough time in the song to do it so this may be a pointless post. but if you put your left index finger on the 2nd fret and then with your right hand, put your thumb where the 6th harmonic should be, like behind the string as and an anchor, and pluck the string with your right index finger, you can get the harmonic with a little practice. If that made any sense at all. Really you can play any note as a harmonic like this. Its not very practical though since it kind of takes a little time. Well, I guess if that was all you did in the song you could do something pretty fast... I'm probably not making any sense right now. And i don't feel like proofreading this and rewording it. So i'll just shutup.

This thread was an interesting read. I don't really practive stretching though, I probably could use some. I can't do the 2-6 without having my hand at a really weird angle. 2-5 with index-pinky is probably my best, and even that is a bit painful.
I practice playing fast and accurately more than anything, especially on my fretless. I believe it even helps your not so "show-off-ish" playing (groove playing?). I might start a thread on this now...

I've found you can get a really cool harmonis by gently slapping or tapping an octace abouve the note that you're fretting (eg. fret the 5th & slap/tap the 17th). It's really easy to get your right hand following the left one with a little practice. It also works with other harmonics (fret the 5th & slap/tap the 21st I think).
