I've noticed a local bassist who's been playing for a good 10-12 years, and I've spoken to him, and picked up a technique from him, I'm not sure of the name but it is as follows;

slap, pop, do your thing whatever, get a chord and instead of plucking it inwards towards your thumb, he goes from scrunched up fingers from a pop position, to flicking all of his fingers out straight to play the chord. i absolutely love it, and it works really well, but I'm just struggling so hard to find a practical use for it, how I'd throw it into a song. it seems to work with chords that play on the ADG strings, but never anything more bassy (seems a little contradictory) but i was wondering if anyone has
A a name for it

and more importantly

B any pointers on using it

Is that like the technique Geddy uses?

Or Stanley Clarke? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGuoY...eature=related)

If so, I think it's just called strumming. I like the technique as well!

It sounds like Rasquedo. It is a technique that comes from Flamenco guitar. On bass Abe Laboriel is the master of the technique.

Correct.

Slightly modified version of rasquedo. Instead of strumming in a rapid pattern, sounds like he just does one strum. This can be very powerful and full-sounding and an easy way to strum quick chords.

I do the same thing. Not hard to do really. In one specific thing I use it for I slap and pop a part and then follow with an up and down strummed part where I am playing harmonic intervals down with my nails and up with my fingertips.

This is also the same as what Claypool does all time too, like in Too Many Puppies?

I started messing with this the other day. I ended up ripping off the skin around my cuticle on my ring finger. Am I just playing too hard?

I guess it is what Les Claypool does. As far as playing too hard, like anything if you aren't used to doing it, it might hurt a bit at first. The tips of my fingers are hard like leather so it doesn't really worry me. You might get some blistering at first.

the finger flutter or flamico, that's geddys trademark. I play with that alot. it's alot of fun. Stanley does that to and maybe Les but I'm not to sure. Check out bassplayer tv they have a whole thing on this.
