Just listen to Bootsy! Bootzilla will show you the path! All hail Bootsy!
No, seriously. Listen to a LOT of Bootsy's work, with JB, with P-Funk, and solo. The man is naturally funky!
Of course, that's only one particular style of funk. Personally, when I wanna get funky, I go for a *FAR* less busy version of Jaco-style funk. That is to say, I get funky by bringing out the highs, breaking out mad finger-muted staccatto, and jumping around. Octaves and fifths seem to work pretty well, but I have this thing for playing major sixths...

But that's my thing, so don't do that. Please. It's all I have. D=
I guess a brief description of "mad finger-muted staccatto" is in order. Basically, you mute your notes not by stopping the string with your plucking hand, but by lifting your fingering hand off of the string quickly after hitting the note. That's what I like to do, anyway. It's not a great way to be efficient, but it gets the funk done.
