Wink Problem solved !!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

This is what I did today: I bought a 5 string package and I have put the bottom 4 strings on my 4 stringer ... ( D'Addario 45 65 80 100 130)
-First time I bought D'Addario-

I have a VERY deep sound (I love it!), the rattling is gone and it plays very smooth !

But the B string almost doesn't fit the slot in the nut, just like Bruce Lindfield said .. How can I solve this (Is it necessary ?)

Anyway, I want to thank you guys for helping me out here ! I JUST LOVE THIS FORUM ! Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!

Can I just say - "TOLD YOU SO!"

If your B string doesn't fit then you are probably going to have intonation problems at 1st - 3rd frets and if you play the string "vigorously" you might make it pop out!!

The solution is to widen the nut slot with a needle file - but this is probably not something for a beginner to try as you risk splitting or breaking the whole nut! Also if you widen it and then decide you want to go back to a normal string - the buzzing etc. will be much worse and the string will move around in the slot.

Isn't it possible to CHANGE the nut with a wider one, and when I put the original strings back on, to change it again ?

Well this would probably be worse than the needle file exercise. Nuts are almost always securely glued in place so they won't move and when you try to change them they split and crack and are generally destroyed in the process. Usually I would recommend that nut change is something that only a qualified guitar/bass tech should attempt and they will charge you for their time!!

That's what I would try. Get tapered strings, Dean Markely, Rotosound, many others will probably fit.

yes, I've done that. My luthier charged me $6.00. The bone nut he made me cost $3.50. Pay the 20 bucks for a set up, and you should be OK.

Hmm. .. sorry for asking, - i'm very new to this stuff- but, tapered strings, are that strings that are thinner at the end ?

These D'Addarios I've put on are also a little thinner at the end ... but they almost don't fit the nut...
