style of bass playing is named???

I'm venturing out of traditional rock pick/fingerstyle and trying to understand what is happening with different styles of music. For instance, with disco type of music, what is that style of bass playing called and how is it done?? I listened to "We are Family" tonight on the drive home and would love to play like that.

Additionally, how is that voooWUMP type of sound made? Not necessarily with that song, I can't think of a specific place - maybe the bassline in "One Headlight" from the Wallflowers. It's kind of a rumble that swells quickly into a note.

I'm also at a point that slap is finding it's way into my toolbox slowly, the links on here are helping. Man, this is such an expressive instrument.

I could be totally wrong, but that sounds like a synthesizer, not an electric bass. If I'm wrong, I'd also like to know how to get that sound lol

Nah, the original sounds like a pretty standard fingerstyle Jazz tone. There's a couple slap licks thrown in for accents.

If I had to name a style, I'd go with 'fingerfunk'.

If you like that style, I'd check out the Finger Funk Workbooks. There's a lot of grooves like that in there. Warning, a lot of the basslines in there are definitely not for beginners.

Interesting observation...and one that only someone who has played the instrument would be likely to make. I agree with you. But I would also say that it's an instrument that doesn't give up its secrets readily. Generally, one discovers its expressiveness only with time and experimentation. Or by listening to a master such as Michael Manring...

Here's a guy with a 'wick doing a half-decent job of it. His tone is a little too bassy and light on mids, but that's basic style. The vid is pretty out of sync though.

I think the recordings i heard were remakes, cause that asian dude sounds nothing like the ones I heard.

::edit:: Yea, I just watched the original. The ones I saw earlier were definitely remakes and synthesized.
