Style vs. Adaptation

Sign in to disble this ad
When some bass players names are mentioned (Flea, Bootsy, Jaco, etc) it's hard not to associate them with the style that is synonymous with their respective names. However, when I play with different groups I find that I adapt my playing style (sound) to that which best fits the groove being laid down.

Do you think a bass player will have more success (however you define it) by establishing a personal style that defines him/her as a bassist, or is adaptation to the playing styles of the group de jour a better approach?
