"Sweeping" with fingers

Sign in to disble this ad
I am really new to bass guitar and i am working hard to play with my fingers but it's kinda exhausting and irritating as i'm always wondering if i'm doing it right or not and trying to play same lines differently to feel how it's most comfortable but one thing which felt comfortable yesterday doesn't sound right next day..
Anyway my question is that if i get used to sweep with my fingers can it be a problem? I found out that if i pulled my hand up when i'm moving up one string and play two strings one after each other it's much more easier that trying to play with the other finger because the finger i played would be on the other string after i hit the first one, that's what i mean by sweeping.

You've discovered a widely used technique for going from high to low strings - using same finger on all.
Since you are already doing it - keep it that way.

Look for raking, that's its other common name, and its a back rake as you come from the string below and catch the string/strings above it with the same finger.

It might get better with practice. But unlearning the raking improved my rhythm. It's weird at first, but I think it's worth it.

If you think it's not, then it's not!

@Fergie: going UP would probably work best when you rake with your thumb, no? With other fingers you'd have to use the fingernail side, if I understood you correctly.

@Willem: yes, it is easier to control the rhythm when alternating fingers. But raking is such a valuable tool that it's worth practicing it, imho.
