switching strings - fret all fingers in readiness?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm doing one of the exercises on activebass.com:

excerpt:

G|---------9-8-7-
D|--7-8-9--------
A|---------------
E|---------------

is it good practice to move all three fretting fingers at once when switching strings? so they're all ready to go...

cheers

In my experience, moving all fingers at once makes it slower. Move them as they're needed IMO.

For speed, it helps to move your fingers before they're needed so that they're already there and ready to go. Consider the following exercise,

G|------7-9------
D|--7-9-----7-9--
A|---------------
E|---------------

If you play it with your index finger on 7 and ring finger on 9, you can get much better speed by moving your index finger to the other string while playing the note on 9 and vice versa.

I haven't tried it, but you might be able to play the exercise you gave more smoothly if you use all four fingers.

G|--------p-r-m-
D|--i-m-r--------
A|---------------
E|---------------

thanks guys! lots of things to try....

due to the notes leading up to this part, I'm fretting with m-r-p on the D, I'm considering when moving the pinky to the 9th fret on the G, to move the other two fingers simultaneously so it's more of a pull off, but with each note plucked as normal.
