Tapping on the Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I am new to this board and would really like to further increase my bass playing by starting to learn some tapping. I have tried to tap but I can never get any sound out of it. Does anyone have any suggestions for what they do to tap? Also a couple good tapping songs I could learn. Thanks a lot.

Hi, Mu(SIC)Fiend3, welcome to TB!

If you are looking for information on tapping, check out some TalkBass search results here. Lots of stuff for you there. You may find more help in the technique section, too. Good luck with your tapping!

I'm going to need a time out, because I can't play like a grown-up and respect other members. Please exuse my absence

OK, to get it back on the topic.

Set up your bass to medium-to-low action, use a light touch.

Position your left hand with the thumb-behind-the-neck posture, and the right hand with the thumb on top of the neck, with the four fretting fingers on a string.

Lightly tap a string to sound a note, lift the finger to stop it. Use all other fingers to mute unwanted string vibration. You can try using a scroungie(?) aka hair band to mute open strings, a la Vic Wooten. Surf the net for online lessons, get Stu Hamm's The Bass Book and his first 3 albums, and even better, get a good teacher.

Hope that helps little grasshopper.
