Tapping on a fretless bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an AP2ASSBS6SFBG. It's a fretless, I'm having trouble tapping stuff on the G and C strings. The lower 4 strings are easy to tap, but the top 2 doesn't offer much sound when I tap. Anyone know what I should do?

Are you tapping/hitting the higher strings harder than you do the lower ones? I'm not a fretless player but on my five st. fretted, I have to use more effort to get the same amount of sound out of the smaller strings.

I'm tapping very hard, I almost slam my fingers on the strings.

What is your EQ like? It's easy to kill those notes if you have a cut in the wrong place. Are you having more trouble on notes low on the neck or high on the neck? My bass only goes up to a G, but that string shouldn't be much harder to tap than the low ones. I wouldn't expect the C to be much harder than that, but I haven't tried it.

What pickup are you using? on my bass tapping comes out better with the bridge pickup only and the mids upped a bit--on my preamp's eq I also up the treble a good bit, though it might be come out different on yours since its completely different setups.

My bass's preamp EQ is all flat, pickups is 50% bridge soapbar and 50% neck soapbar. It's like there's a cushion under the top 2 strings when I tap them, not much sound comes out. Usually no sound, or just a little sound, come out of the top C string. I tried raising my pickups higher near the top 2 strings, but that didn' help at all.

Before they were a few months old, and now I cleaned them and boiled them in hot water, and the volume is not much different.
