Tapping like Vic Wooten

Hey TB, I was doing a Vic Wooten lesson on tapping on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SocYTUn-NQA

He is not even plucking the note of his fretting hand? What is that about? I have never heard, seen, or thought about doing that. When I am doing this stuff from the first lesson on this video it doesn't sound as good. The notes on his fretting hand sound so crisp and clear as if he is plucking them. I instantly want to blame it on some kind of amazing compression.
Is he using massive compression?
If so what kind?

IT's all in the technique and the bass's setup. It takes practice to get it sounding as clear as vic, but having lower action or lighter strings make it a lot easier.
