Tapping with pinky?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm wondering... is it totally weird to tap with your pinky? (on the fretting hand that is). I'm working on improving my tapping and I am so used to using my pinky and index finger more than any other fingers..... so should I just build up the strength in my two middle fingers and use them instead? would it make it easier in the long run? Or is there nothing wrong with me using my pinky?

PS: I did post this in an old thread and got nothing.... I know someone can answer this question

Thanks!

The impression I got is that you should be using all fingers of both hands to tap.
I use my pinkies, but I use my other fingers as much as I can as well.
Using more fingers can only help, but I guess it depends on what sort of riffs you're tapping.

You want to be able to use all four fingers of both hands. This will just increase the space you can cover and your physical possibilities.

I'm working on tapping too and i'm finding it difficult to get my right pinky up to strength in the tap and to not think about using the pinky when I do use it. This is where i'm falling into trouble.

It's funny, but I'm usually unconscious to how I use my fingers when I play, but paying attention to it the other day I realized that I don't use my pinky independently, I fret with the pinky and index together, so that's how I tap as well... which I can now see causing some problems.

Thanks for the responses, I'm going to try and fix this.

I've never got into tapping but I do use my pinky on my right hand to hammer on with, now thats weird, but I occasionally do this because I can get a combination harmonic and hammer on blend at the same time, I pull my pinky into my palm and sorta flick it, and strike the string finger nail first, you should try it, sounds the best on the G and D string on the high side of the neck.
