Cool

depends what you are trying to do...

if you are trying to do tapped arpeggios (like Nuno Bettencourt in the He Man Woman Hater solo) then you need to stick to the notes in the key.

However, you can get cool effects by moving a set pattern of finger positioning around on the fretboard and not worrying about what key you're in...this style was often used by eddie van halen. (note that I'm not saying EVH didn't play in the right key, the difference here is subtle)

A good place to start is to just tap triads (root, third, fifth) for the chord you're playing over. If you're playing over an A chord then you can tap this pattern.

The notes being played are (E then A then C) You can take the root, third and fifth notes of any chord and arrange them in any order and tap them.

(tap the notes on fret 21 with the first finger of your right hand)

G----21-- 14h17-----------21--14h17---
D----------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------
