tapping videos, bassists, lessons

Sign in to disble this ad
I've always loved the tapping sound, so i want to start practice on that... I've seen two Stu Hamm videos so i started from there but now i'm looking for more...

who are the best bassists for tapping? i already know about stu hamm and billy sheehan, but are there some new bassists that are great at tapping? (specially 4 string ones...)

are there some video lessons to teach tapping in bass? websites, anything?

thanks in advance and sorry if this has already been asked.

I get a feeling that no one here on tb goes to music school.
Go to music school or just get a teacher. You can't learn everything on internet (maybe you can but with teacher everithing is easier and faster)

If you are interesting in tapping, I recommend you check out the following:

4 string players:

Stuart Hamm (rarely plays 5)
George Smed
Billy Sheehan
Victor Wooten (sometimes plays 5+)

5+ string players:

Jean Baudin
Garry Goodman
Brendan Wires (solo 6 string player)
Les Claypool (mainly uses a 4 for slap and a 6 for tapping)

These are my favourites (especially Vic, Stu, and Jean) and are all amazing players.

And of course.. checking out my music couldn't hurt.. .

i do have a teacher, but with him i'm learning theory and improvisation.

the tapping thing is just so i can have fun doing new stuff that sounds different, and i don't know any teacher that teaches tapping (small town, i have to go an 1h20 by train to have lessons)

OK then I understand. Ask your teacher can he help you with tapping. Mine worked it out with me but if your teacher can't help you with that he can at least tell you where you can find some useful stuff for tapping.

Koki, that's a good idea, i'll probably ask him the next time.

EADGmx thanks for the info, i didn't know about some of those artists. Goodman and Baudin are very good. I want to listen to more stuff like this!

Your stuff sounds really nice too, nice cover of "mad world"!

since your studying theory and improve with your teacher why not use these lessons to advance your tapping.for example, try tapping lines in unison an octave higher

Video Progressions has a video for tapping.

I don't know how good it is, but I have their videos for the "Slap Bass Program" and "Fingerstyle Funk" (with Rocco Prestia) and they are both great. Well laid out, excellent production and plenty of examples.

Here's the webpage for the tapping video: The Art of Tapping

It has some audio and video samples. Unfortunately it is only available on VHS - no DVD.

can you play linus and lucy yet? at the proper tempo? {this was the first piece i learnt on the bass} i just saw the great pumkin and realized that over the course of a couple years my tempo on this piece was way off. while it is a simple piece it can be quite challenging to play it like stu. wooten also has some great tapping ideas in his videos.

"The Art of Tapping" is an excellent video. The instructor's clothes and hairstyle are VERY 80s though. Great, useful content and highly recommnded!

This video is worth its weight in gold! The VERY 80s clothes and hairstyle of the instructor are funny though. Excellent content with very usable applications. Highly recommended!

I'm in music school. Cornish College of the Arts - Jazz Instrumental (bass) major. You're not really going to learn a whole lot about the technique of tapping specifically in music school (since you generally don't tap when playing standard jazz style pieces ). But you will learn tons about music playing, and theory in general. Which will help with all aspects of your playing.

Adam Nitti is rediculous! I've been working on the sweep-picking kind of tapping he does (in the Fritter Boy vid). Check out these Adam Nitti vids too:

I've got a vid of me tapping somewhere on here....That was a while ago though, I don't remember if it's any good

Baudin is one of my favourite bass players easily, I love his solo music (and it's really fun to play, too).

Thank you for the compliments on my music as well, I am glad you liked it.
