EDIT: After very close examination of the video I see that he's using both 3rd and 4th fingers on the same fret... okay, I'll try that. I'd still like to know if anyone has found any good exercises though... thanks.

It's apparently a common issue, because this is also the point of someone else's post titled "Grits Ain't Groceries", which got no replies.
MarlowDK's lick of the day #1 requires some FAST 5th drops from the pinkie.

Part of that lick goes like this (pinkie is doing the slide)
10/11\10--8-9--------
--------10---10-8-10-
---------------10-----
----------------------
The more I practice, the worse and more sloppy I seem to get. Rather than honing my skills and causing me to move more accurately as I drop each string, my pinkie starts trying to slide straight sideways in a way that causes a train wreck.
Apparently I'm not alone when it comes to having issues with dropping 5ths quickly, but I've not seen any answers so far when I searched.
Has anyone found a practice exercise that can help a person to learn to drop 5ths quickly, accurately and while using the tip of the finger instead of the pad or, worse, side sliding and causing a mess?
Thanks.
