Technique used in Mayhem song?

This is one of my favorite bass lines, but I don't know where to begin in terms of finding out how to capture the sound of the bass in the intro. It sounds really high gain with a lot of treble. I don't know if this is slapping, picking, or plucking. There's a lot of punch in it. There might be some sort of high gain effect I'm unaware of too. Any tips would be appreciated. I want to learn how to play like this. I can play it while plucking, but, I can't get that metallic, glassy, punchy sound. Could it be the strings too? It sounds like it might be stainless steal or something. I'm sorry if this isn't specifically about technique. I didn't know whether to post in the hardware sub forum or this one. I'm just sorta stumped.

Yah, that makes sense. I read in an interview that the guitarist did a lot of the bass lines for that album. They've never played the song live. I haven't even bothered playing with a pick, but I definitely see value in it.
