so i know the notes for this song . and i have the right equipment. but there is just the problem of the sound. i was wondering if anyone had advice on how to tighten up your playing for jazz and how to make those double strings crossovers in the beginning of this song. thanks

What... you've got Joe Zawinul doubling your line on authentic 70s synths!!??

I kept him in my rack for a while, but it was a pain to load in for shows, and he started to smell after a week or two.

Those crossovers:

Index-Middle-Index-Middle-Index-Middle.

And yes it's a crazy song to play.

At performance tempo, it is practically difficult to tell the difference between playing the standard transcription and ghosting the written lower notes as muted tones on the high string. You have to decide if it is worth the extra effort, when no one can hardly tell the difference anyway. When in doubt, cheat.

For the double-string jumps in the beginning, just play it normally (index-middle-index-midde), it just takes some practice to do it right.
Basically, the answer to the whole thing is: practice practice practice practice practice practice.

There are about as many ways to play this as there are bassists. Whatever works for you... but the key is practice. The thumb has always been a very handy tool for me... it allows me to play faster than if I restricted myself to index-middle finger only. Here's a slowed down video clip (not very good quality) of the beginning of the tune using thumb-index & middle. This video assumes you know where to fret so concentrate on the plucking hand....

..and now, off to "Technique" where this belongs.

You could alway check out the Marcus Miller version and try slapping the tune.

I'm working on a fully tapped version(which makes the beginning really easy). I'll post it whenever i get it nice and clean.

If your talking left hand tecnique I bar the first finger to get both the low C and high Bb, I use my 4th finger for the high C and the G.

If your asking about the right hand I alternate and rake the last 2 notes G and C with my 2nd finger.
