Teeth Picking a la Yngwie; Possible on bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just wondering if teeth picking has ever been successfully attempted on bass before and if so, a little direction and how to?

What would you possibly gain from that?

Personally I have no idea how/why this would be done, but please post a video when you do.

You would gain the same thing from that as practicing sweep arpeggios.

No you wouldn't, sweep picked arpeggios, though they're showy, still have a purpose other than showing off (no, its not a technique I use). A better comparison would be "You would gain the same thing from playing with your toes". Picking with your teeth? Its just a "look at me" technique, which goes against what I see the role of a bass player to be. But if it floats your boat, go for it.

I wouldn't, but then again I like my teeth. Think about the dental bills on that , If you did it on a regular basis > Instead, take that money and do something smart or stupid with it, whichever works for you.

Yngvie picking with teeth:

Since you can't see it, it is hard to say exactly how he is doing it, but it seems he is keeping his head somewhat stationary and mostly moving the guitar with his hands.

As far as the consequences for your teeth, meh. The things you gotta do for show biz...

I have long considered picking guitar with one's teeth to probably be the most pointless things that I have ever seen a guitarist do. Personally, it strikes me as being more goofy than impressive. Please don't take bass playing down to that level.

I work with a guitar player who solos with his teeth on select songs.
It sounds great and he flies on his solos. Yes, he grew up with Hendrix.
yes, he is showing off, but the crowd loves it night after night.

you can just play behind your head like the guitarists do, it's the same show off effect and it's really not that hard

I could imagine a bass string breaking while teeth picking could have painful results.

Its easy! I learned form a guitar player i used to jam with. It's really a 2 step process::

1.) hold instrument up to your face
2.) cheat: play with a pick any way -nobody can see

it sounds stupid, i know, but the first time the guitarist tried it, we all went "holy cr*p!" and were totally fooled.

My guess is that anybody of a mind to be impressed by teeth playing is not going to notice it's a trick anyhow

Why would you even bother making this thread, unless it was to give onlyclave yet another chance to impart his immense wisdom once again?

By the way that whole thing of playing with the teeth is commonly a trick where the notes are tapped with the fretting hand while the loser doing it tries to look convincing to the 12 year olds that buy it.
