I have tendinitis with my right plucking hand that I've struggled with over a year and hasn't resolved.. I have tried rest ice, strengthening, nssaids, massage. Everything u name it. I'm wonderng if I just need a long break few months t see if it will resolve.. It gets better then gets resggravated... I'm seriously depressed about this situation....

Just stop every thing... and do NOT abbuse it... If you abbuse it... It can take lots and lots and lots of time to heal...

+1 It takes a long, long time to get better.....sometimes well over a year. But if you continue to abuse it, it will just get worse.

So do I just quit playing...?? I think I can still play pickstyle and not aggravate it.

I might just quit fingerstyle for now ... It's frustrating

You may want to re-think your playing technique. A well-versed instructor may be able to help you overcome or compensate for what appears to be a repetitive motion injury.

Any youtube clips available?

Lightbulb A Thought...

My Friend,

Check with your physician about Meloxicam, prescription brand-name Mobic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meloxicam). It is an anti-inflammatory originally prescribed to me for severe tendonitis in my elbow that was making my grip weak and ordinary movement very painful. Two weeks into treatment and the tendonitis was GONE - I continued the meds for a few months and then discontinued using them. That was over a year ago and the problem has yet to resurface.

I am not advocating just popping a pill to cure your problems - there is an underlying cause that needs to be addressed. The pill will, however, hopefully allow you to keep playing until you figure out what's triggering the flare-ups.

(Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on T.V. Consult with your personal physician who knows your medical history intimately and inquire of them if this medication is right for you.)

I will also add that my physician was also taking this medication for a rotator cuff issue - meloxicam allowed her to avoid surgery completely, and that was a couple of years back - she hasn't had any issues since.

Food for thought for you, anyway. Good luck in getting the problem corrected!

----
Kurt

Take a break from any and everything you use your hand for, with the exception of eating and necessary stuff. Don't even think about playing bass for a while, and DO NOT lift heavy things. I had tendinitis in my right hand two years back, and when I got it I didn't play a single note for 6 weeks (I almost killed myself, one day after I got the tendinitis I received my 2nd bass...). Then I got it again 6 months later, and again it took 6 weeks to get rid of it. Then I changed my technique and started plucking much softer, and making sure I always land on the string above after every pluck.

Both my brother and sister have had problems with this. My bro had to take almost a year off of playing percussion as a music major to recover. Hasn't has any problems since.

His Dr. told him that playing basketball is great for strengthening the muscles and tendons. Low impact low stress use of those muscles.

Been there too. I am a golf professional, and a journeyman welder by trade. A couple years ago I had tendonitis in both the elbows, both golfer's elbow and tennis elbow to add to the misery... first bout was about 8 months to clear up. Was good for about 5 months. Then it recurred in my left elbow. It took 18 months to recover from that. Rest it, stretches, and more rest. Good luck, hope yours goes away soon. Tendonitis is no fun.

I was tested to have moderate to severe carpal tunnel syndrome, and the CTS makes the tendons swell in my hands, sometimes to the point that it feels like I was stung by a bee. I take mobic for knee inflammation, but I take a very low dose due to side effects. It doesn't help completely with the tendonitis I have in my hands, but it helps a little. I ran out of it for a spell, and my hands got worse till I got more. The Dr. said I don't have nerve damage yet, but he wants to do the surgery any time I'm ready. What has helped me is to lay off, no heavy lifting, and wearing wrist braces when I sleep. I hate surgury, but I know it's coming sooner or later. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't play guitar.
