I thought about just adding the the getting old sux thread as this is in a similar vein. I get the elbow pain that my doc tells me is pretty much the insert-sport-here ailment. I have started getting it pretty bad from finger picking. I am doing the classic "hang the hand over the side" approach with my elbow pretty much against my body. If I use my thumb, I move my elbow out and plant my fingers below the strings and get tremendous relief. I suspect using a pick would be okay also; I play mandolin and that doesn't bother me (it bugs other people, but that's another story. ). I would really prefer to finger pick, if I could come up with a workable adjustment. I don't want to get into the pick/no pick wars, but I don't like the sound and feel of that as much. Thumb is probably my second choice and unless someone has a better suggestion, I am probably going to start alternating between finger picking an thumbing. Thoughts/suggestions?

<EDIT> Forgot to mention this has been a recurring problem for years; I have one of the bands somewhere that I should wear, but that helps with recovery - doesn't allow you to do things that would give you the problem. I get various rheumatic stuff; prone to it due to heredity (B27+ for those who are unlucky enough to know that that is).

One thought would be to lower your bass and see if that helps.

Except that I play sitting more often than standing.

Maybe you should stand

PATIENT: Doc, it hurts when I do this.

DOCTOR: Don't do that!

I had a physical therapist tell me that most people experiance pain because of lack of exercise/muscle support for the joints. Do some light work with 5 pound free weights every day.

Try a felt pick, they take a while to break in, but once they become soft, you can get a nice fingerstyle type of attack out of them and still play with a pick to alleviate your pain.

How about googling for "elbow tendonitis", which is what I think you are describing. Could get some medical-type ideas, learn causes and ways to alleviate.
