Because of my day job schedule I cant really take any private lessons right now, so I was wondering if there are any videos anyone can suggest that are good theory trainers. I mainly play by ear and really need to learn some theory and site reading. Any suggestions?

I'm using a hal leonard bass method book for site reading. I use it at least 15 min a day and it's helping me learn to site read the bass clef.

Sight reading is all about getting the practice time in and practicing regularly. Pickup Dozauer cello method book one and use that. Start with just 5-10 minutes at a time and work your way up. The more patient you are, the faster you will learn (there are no shortcuts).

Tons of dvd's you can buy that are great. But also some really great clips from them on youtube (although, search carefully as there is a mountain of crappy "lessons" on youtube, definitely stay away from any "expert village" videos, they are the worst!). One of the best I have seen is a Stu Hamm video explaining the modes. Also, some by Billy Sheehan...

+1 on Hal Leonard's complete BASS method

studybass.com is actually where it all clicked in on reading music, can't say enough good things about that site!

Theory

instituteofbass.com offers a 12 part theory course for bass on line for about $30. Some very good information and you have access to an instructor for questions. A very good investment IMO.

Improving your reading is nothing more than "drudgery". You have to keep at it every day even when you're frustrated and bored - there's no other way to do it, but it will come (I'm at the frustrated and bored stage myself).

Good luck!
