thinking in bars

I find that I tend to that when I pratice with guitarist/singer that they think of chord change timing differently then I do. Since they are sing they think of the chord changes in relation to the lyrics. I find that I have to count while the dude is playing and singing, and write things out in bars before I get a good feel for the song. Once I put things down on paper in bars I pick it up fast. Perhaps it is inexperience, but perhaps it is the way my mind works. Any thought or opinions on this?

Inexperience on both your parts. Singers need to learn to think in terms of measures and beats. Instrumentalists need to learn to focus on the melody and lyrics. Lyrics and melody and harmony and rhythm are all important, and a song or performance is only great if all four are paid attention to.
