Hey everyone. I'm thinking of starting to use my third finger. Does anyone have any exercises I can use to help get used to using it.

thanks.

Use the search function. This has been done to death.

Just go either 1-2-3 or 3-2-1 whichever is more comfortable. Get a metronome, and start practicing. Scales, arpeggios, songs, etc. Just don't skip fingers for now. Later you can rake and skip and anything you want, but first you want to make sure all 3 fingers can actually pull their own weight.

Don't go 1-2-3-2-1 or 3-2-1-2-3 since you're using the 2nd finger twice as much as the others and that defeats the purpose of going 3 finger.

Are you talking plucking hand or fretting hand?

If you spend a few years driving in L.A. freeway traffic, you'll find yourself using your "third finger" with increasing frequency!

See right hand 1 and 2: http://garywillis.com/pages/lessons/lessmain.html

Do the pattern in reverse i.e starting on the lowest string.

BTW, this exercice is not about doing 123212, 123123, 321321 or 2³½8°¾, it's about the muting. All you need to do afterwards is picking real music and make concious choice about which finger will play which note, like you would on the fretting hand. Soon enough, you won't think about it.
