I'm in the group that uses 3 below the 5th fret. I will use one/fret one certain songs ("Let's go Crazy" comes to mind).

4 fingers for sure....Without my pinky I would be lost...on both hands! But, I have to say I use the pinky for fretting more than I use my ring finger...which I guess is kinda weird. However I did play guitar before switching to bass, so Im sure thats why I use the pinky so much.

i cannot fathom what would posses a bass teacher to promote anything other than a four finger approach. my opinion is not fact, but i think thats ridiculous, and i would seriously consider a new teacher. i went through three bass teachers, and it wasnt until i found a good one (apparently #1 in the bay area, however that is decided) that i really started progressing. get the most for your money and investigate reputable instructors. it really does make a (big) difference.
