Thumb Anchor

i have a p-bass so I just anchor my thumb on the pickup. then move down to the E or A string when playing lower strings. I have a slight problem: When I'm anchoring on the E, sometimes the pressure makes my E string hit the magnetic pickup and it makes a thumping sound on my amp. Is there anyway to prevent this? Do I just have to be more careful?

Just don't push on it.

It's more likely about lowering the pickup a bit (to me).
