| Thumb Pickers, and a Question for Fingerstyle Tone

As a general rule, I prefer playing fingerstyle, using up to and including 4 fingers if I have to for certain lines. Still, I find myself missing notes no matter how much I practice, and some lines just seem like they were made for a pick. Rather than choose, or fumble around for a plectrum, I've started wearing a thumb pick when I play. It rests on the edge of my humbucker's housing during finger lines, and comes forward for pick lines. The only downside to this is that it's hard to slap, but as it stands, I really don't like it much, and never cared to learn it, so to me that's no big loss.
So, topic could be two-fold. 1, I wonder if anyone else subscribes to this technique.
2. Since I dial in my tone for finger, the attack sounds kinda harsh when I switch (if I do the opposite, my finger lines lack timbre muscle). I was thinking about cannibalizing the striking edge with some cloth or something. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for materials or procedure for doing this. |
