Thumb Picks ..who uses them?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have always been a finger player. I have recently been practicing with a standard pick. Up and downstrokes etc.. Down strokes I'm ok at . But overall I struggle with a pick and its frustrating. Cant palm mute very well. I decided to try thumb picks and its been working great. Just for downstrokes as the pick slides on thumb when I try to upstroke. I know I,ve seen country players use em. I think I'll use thumbpicks when I need a stronger sound as a pick gives .Should I give up on regular picks? I'm pretty good playing fast with fingers at least I think. The only downside is the tips are thicker and I cant upstroke. Any thoughts?

never used them but its never good to give anything up completely...i used medium picks my whole life and upstrokes lacked "girth" so i switched to xtra heavy and now it sounds "beefy"

I've been thinking of giving this a try recently. I want to try a sort of hybird style, plus I could switch mid song from finger to pick with ease. At least this is what I would hope to achieve.

I do! I'm 90% finger player but some songs do scream out for a pick. It free's up your hand/fingers and switching between the two styles is so easy.

Check out Jerry Peek on Steve Morse's album, "The Introduction." He uses a thumbpick/slap technique that's pretty amazing.

thumbpicks

The thumbpicks I have now are too thick, I'm looking for a medium thickness. I just found some on elderly's website. I'm going to give em a shot. Thanks for all the info. Like I said before I prefer fingers but I recognize the fact there are times when you need a pick. I can downstroke fast but suck at muting, a thumbpick feels like cheating but I really seem to prefer it when I need to pick with slower beats.

I've thought on using finger picks, not just thumb picks. I would leave the thumb free to be able to slap.

Geddy Lee has long nails so he gets that's great tone, but I can't stop biting my nails, so I've thought about giving a try and buy 3 fingerpicks for my index, middle and ring. What about that?

Ever since I started playing with picks which is still pretty rare for me I use thumb picks. It allows me to alternate between fingerstyle and pick so fast. Plus as the OP stated it helped my upstroke.
