Definitely a good start. Some bassists like to hang it too high or too low. Neither are good for ya. Find yourself a nice comfortable strap length to allow for what Mike said.
When I was taking classical guitar, they suggested keeping my thumb behind the middle finger to have more strength. Typically, you'll want your thumb to run along the skunk stripe (if you have one) or down the center of the neck with your fingers being parallel to the frets (if you use frets....).
Next, go to a guitar store some day and see if any of the pros think your positioning looks good. Listen to their suggestions and make adjustments if necessary.
When practicing at home, be sure to check your form every once in a while with a mirror. It may sound corny, but I do that from time to time to make sure I'm doing alright.
A cheap and easy lesson is to watch every bassist from novice to pro. See what works and what doesn't work. Pick up the good things and make sure you're not doing the bad things.
