Thumb rest on J-bass.

Don't lough but why have a thumb rest on the lower side ?
I can see that many J-basses has a thumb rest
mounted on the treble side (under), including my own.
But how can you rest the thumb under and play anything.

It's not for your thumb. It's for your fingers so you can pluck with your thumb.
