Thumb rests

Anyone else think thumb rests are a bit bulky and interfere with your playing.
I bought a thumb rest the other day to put on my jazz bass because i will be putting chrome covers on in a couple of weeks and as soon as it was on it just didn"t feel right and i was struggling to drop smoothly from the E string to the A string as i like to rest my thumb as the string above when im playing, the thing was just to bulky for my liking ( i have big hands ) so out came the saw and sandpaper and made my own, its the same length as an original rest but is slightly narrower and half the depth and boy what a difference,it feels so comfortable.
Anyone else done this because of the bulk issue.
Looks like i will be using the original thumb rest on a precision project im thinking of doing but put it below the strings and use it as a tugbar.

Exactly my thought.

Had to sand off a good bit to make it playable, but once the height is good, thumbrests feel ok to me. Now playing without one feels kinda off...
