Thumb stroke down/ index finger up

I've started using this technique recently to play medium to fast tempo passages (I find upstrokes on two fingers rather difficult)

I was wondering if there are any other bassists using this technique and whether there are any videos around for more info....?

That's how I've mostly played since losing the pick (used to be a guitarist). Thumb for downstrokes, index/middle/ring for upstrokes. It gives you two distinct kinds of attack, corresponding in a way to kick/snare. You can combine these into dynamic patterns that complement the drum beats.

Ah, someone else! I'm wondering whether it's a hybrid technique that people find by accident or whether anybody well known has talked about it...

Well, in my case it was self-invented. In the early 70s I was trying to learn Chuck Rainey lines with no clear idea of how he did it, and that's how it came out.

...Matt Garrison demonstrating 4 finger technique - it seems to me it could be adapted for just the thumb and index finger - a sort of lightweight version of it

I cannot see the youtube piece, but I have seen bass players adapt the classical guitar, thumb and all fingers picking style and get amazing results.
