I've previously mentioned Mario Cippolina's use of a thumbpick to facilitate quick switching to fingers... here's a good video.

Is there an art to using a thumbpick? I've tried using one (along with fingerpicks) when playing guitar and couldn't get them to work for me because they always end up spinning around on my fingers when they strike the strings.

I would guess that you weren't using small (tight) enough picks, or that it required more practice. Not sure.
