Tic-tac and baritone techniques...

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this is a bass forum and this instrument is more of a "guitar", but since I'd be using it as the bass voice, I thought this would be fitting here.

I have a baritone guitar tuned BEADF#B and I would like to start using it in my band.

We play punk with hints of folk and country and I'd like to include the baritone in addition to or instead of the bass part, depending on the song. We don't really have any power chords in our song, our stuff is pretty much "open" chord based.

I have two questions:

What would be some cool ways to incorporate this instrument into our songs? What are some recordings I can listen to of old tic-tac bass to get inspiration?

Could I harmonize chords with the guitarist? For instance, if the guitarist is playing a Gmaj chord, could I use the same chord shape on baritone, making a Dmaj chord, or would it be better to make it a D7?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how it'd sound but a Dmaj7 would probably clash because of the G#, a D7 could work, it's like a Gmaj7 in 2nd inversion.

If your band plays in standard tuning, tune down one more step from where you are now. ADGCEA. Then tune down from there if needed. Roll off some of the tone, but not too much. You still want the deep twangy baritone sound. Watch the videos of jimmy page on his danelctro baritone. Not bassy, but awesome.
