Timing problems with fingers

Sign in to disble this ad
A bit of background: I've been playing guitar for 15+ years, had a bass in the house for around 5 years, but I'm just starting to take it seriously.

I've noticed that I have problems with tempo and timing when playing with my fingers - I have trouble just producing a solid string of eighth notes. With a pick, I'm fine, but I'd like to learn to play fingerstyle. Obviously a lot of time with a metronome is in order, but are there any other pointers you guys can offer? Thanks!

Practice the alternating plucking on your knee or wherever when you are away from your bass, like while driving. "Play" along with the car radio. Also, when you are watching TV or other mindless activity, plug in a headphone amp and just work on plucking hand technique. You can vary your tempos, rhythms and jump from string to string. But it doesn't have to be anything fancy. Aim for steadiness and consistency. There is no substitute for hours.

You will need to pay somewhat close attention for a time, but after a while it becomes more automatic. It was a milestone for me when I realized that guitar and bass are played primarily with the playing hand, not the fretting hand. Poor right hand technique means you suck. Great right hand technique means you can groove.
