I am fine with reaching fifth fret from first but i find myself using my pinky to use the next fret, is there something i can do to help this, i have small hands for male of my age so the finger per fret method feels uncomfortable and is there many disadvantages of this anyway?

The main disadvantage is speed. I have the smallest hands of any normal-sized male I have ever met, and I have no problem. You have to get your thumb behind the neck and use it to pivot your hand to make those reaches. And you have to force yourself to do it for about a week, and then it becomes second nature.

I guess you just need to develop some discipline.
