Transitioning from righty to lefty...

Sign in to disble this ad
Seeing as I'm finally getting a lefty bass, I thought I'd ask:

I'm a LH bassist and I although I played righty, I find it difficult to mentally work things out LH and then play it righty, hence the swap.

So, how can I make it easier on myself to make the swap? Muscle fatigue is a bit of an issue here...

Well I can this...I play rt handed and had severe issues with one finger on my fretting hand making it impossible to play with. That left me with my middle ring and pinky for fretting. I tried to turn the bass upside down and play that way. The problem was not upside down, it was my brain reversing the playing/fretting I did before...I say if it isn't broke don't fix it. Are you going to play better or easier? If not why change. BTW I played fretting without my index for about one month or so. Overcoming weakness only makes you stronger.

You're dominant hand is the left, but you played bass "righty", so wouldn't that make you a RH bassist? If you've been playing the RH way for years, don't fix what isn't broken.

I've tried switching hands for fun, and it's like learning again from scratch, except I know theory now.

Since it is your brain that ultimatley decides if you are left or right handed go with what it has decides. Muscle dexterity can be learned if need be, how long and how well is a personal thing. The theory that left handed people tend to be more creative is strong and good proof is out there to support it, but it is subjective. As has been said if it ain't broke....
