how can i help increase the speed of my fingers to get a similar speed for Tremolo picking without using a pick?

i know that its almost impossible to get quite as fast as a pick can but i want to try to get as fast as possible without using a pick

The best thing to do is just get a metronome, find a tempo you can comfortably play, and then push it to a tempo where you're struggling. Make sure you're playing the rhythm evenly, and I suggest too that you try to play different notes with it too, so that your left hand speed doesn't fall too far behind your right hand speed.

I've spent 30 years trying to do that. It's not going to happen overnight. But basically you learn some good exercises and keep pushing yourself with a metronome.

You trying to Trem pick with your fingers? Right. Lemme help. I find it best to be resting my thumb on the pickup or string above where you're picking for starters...

Then pluck the string normally, but go back in a downward motion. I normally do this with one finger, but you can try it with both if it suits..

MASSIVE +1

i used to play in a metal band where it was either chuggy riffs or die hard fast beats. over the fast bits my left hand would hardly move at all and my right hand would be moving FAST.

that was a few years ago, now I'm in a band where i need to play fast riffs but jumping between strings, my right hand can do it and my left hand just fluffs all the notes more often than not.

practice both hands!!!

You could use your thumb to tremolo pick, sans an actual flatpick. I've been practicing that technique in lieu of finger speed, and it's not hard to transition between thumb picking and fingerstyle, slap, two hand tapping, or whatever.

another thing to keep in mind is you can use hammer ons and pull offs inbetween fast picking to get all those notes in there. try 2 plucks with one hammeron...2 plucks+2 hammer+1 pulloff.ect..
