Unclear slapping tone in high register on the E string

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently got into slapping and cannot get clean slapping tone when I slap a note higher than A on the E string (e.g., C# or the 9th fret on the E). All I get is a metallic clank with almost no pitch. In other words, the trasient is there but not a sustaining note. What am I doing wrong?

I have the same problem on all my basses whose action is about 2 mm on the E string. I use DR Hi-Beams or Lo-Riders (40-100).

Try moving your thumb in relation to the string's length. You slap at a certain spot in the wave that is the string (Middle, 75% to the bridge, etc.). By moving your thumb, you can keep the same "spot" of the string. It probably also needs a setup for slap.

ya- from your description im guessin youre either:

1- not set up right. check the usual suspects (bridge, truss rod), or have someone do it if youre not able to get results or think youre going to damage something.

2- you could be hitting the string with your thumb but not pulling away fast enough; just kind of mashing it, which may not be noticeable in the lower register. if youre just getting into slap, this would be my best guess, and i would check your technique before you break out the wallet and/or tool kit.

ive been playing e 105 hi beams on stingray 4s for 10+ years, and slap right at the end of the neck, as many do, and i dont have the problems you describe. again- check your technique first.
